Sur Ron Lighting Upgrade Guide: Headlights, Baja Pods and Wiring

Stock lighting on most electric dirt bikes is built to a price and it shows the first time you ride at dusk. Lighting is also one of the few upgrades that is simultaneously a safety improvement, a looks improvement and, in many places, a legal requirement for road use.

Why stock lighting disappoints

Two problems, usually together. Output is low, so you cannot see far enough to ride at the speed the bike is capable of. And beam shape is poor, so what light exists is scattered rather than placed where you need it.

Baja-style pods

The most popular upgrade on e-motos, and popular for good reason: the output jump over stock is not subtle, and the look suits these bikes. Pods come in different beam patterns, broadly spot for distance and flood for width, and many riders run a combination.

Browse Baja-style lights, which we stock for Sur Ron, Talaria, E-Ride Pro and several e-bike platforms.

Plug-in versus wired: read this before ordering

This is the detail that decides whether your install takes ten minutes or an evening.

Plug-in units connect to your bike's factory lighting connector. No splicing, no soldering, and reversible if you sell the bike.

Wired units need connecting into the harness, which is straightforward if you are comfortable with basic wiring and frustrating if you are not.

Every product page states which it is. If you would rather not touch the harness, filter for plug-and-play options and save yourself the afternoon.

Mounting

Light mounts are model specific, because the front end of a Light Bee, an Ultra Bee and a Talaria are all different shapes. Start from Surron parts, Ultra Bee parts or Talaria parts and the fitment will be listed.

If you are also running a front plate, check that the light and plate can coexist, since some combinations compete for the same real estate.

Rear lighting and visibility

Being seen matters as much as seeing. Tail lights and under-glow style lighting both exist in e-moto lights, and rear visibility is the cheaper half of the safety equation.

Power draw

Lights draw from the same battery that moves the bike. Modern LED units are efficient enough that the range impact is small for most riders, but if you are running multiple high-output pods on long rides, it is not nothing. Worth knowing rather than worth worrying about.

Legality

Rules on lighting, road use and what counts as a road-legal vehicle vary enormously by country, state and even city. Check locally before assuming a lighting upgrade makes a bike street legal. It usually does not by itself.
